GoogleのVR HMD
Googleは12月1日、同社が開発するスマートフォン用VRヘッドマウントディスプレイ（HMD）「Daydream View」を日本国内のGoogleストアで発売することを発表した。発売日は12月13日で、価格は1万2000円（税込）。12月1日から予約を開始する。カラーはチャコールのみ。 Daydream Viewは、同社のモバイルVRプラットフォーム「Daydream」で利用できるVR HMD。「Daydream-ready」を取得したハイエンドスマートフォンをDaydream ViewにセットすることでVRコンテンツの「プレミアムな体験」を提供するという。コンテンツは本体に付属する「Daydream Viewコントローラー」で操作する。
日本で発売しているスマートフォンで、当初対応するのはLGの「V30+」、モトローラの「Moto Z」、ZTEの「Axon 7」、ASUSの「ZenFone AR」、サムスンの「Galaxy S8」「Galaxy S8+」「Galaxy Note 8」の7機種。LG V30+の購入者にDaydream Viewをプレゼントするキャンペーンも行う。
米国では2016年11月から販売を開始したのに対し、日本での発売が1年遅れた理由について、「スマートフォンメーカーとコンテンツメーカーのパートナーを探すため。日本でローンチするに当たって、日本に合わせたエキサイティングなストーリーが必要だった」と、同社のVRプロダクトマネジャーのアンドリュー・ナトカー氏が答えた。
Daydream-readyに認定されていないスマートフォンでは、Daydream Viewの利用はできないという。これは、Daydreamのユーザー体験のために、CPUやGPU、ディスプレイの解像度、センサー類についてメーカーと調整しているためとする。それ以外のスマートフォンでは、引き続き「Cardboard」の利用を推奨している。なお、Daydream-readyであるGoogleのスマートフォン「Pixel」と「Pixel2」については、「できるだけ多くの製品を紹介したいとは思っているが、Pixel／Pixel2について具体的に発表できることはない」（アンドリュー氏）とした。
プラットフォームとしてのDaydreamは、2018年初頭にアップデートを予定しているという。アップデートではVRプレイ中のプレイヤー視点のビデオキャプチャーや、プレイ画面に通知などを表示できる「ダッシュボード」機能を実装する予定。
日本発のDaydream向けゲームとして、「釣りスタVR」や「Rez Infinite」などが当初ラインアップされる。発表会では、グリーの釣りスタVRプロデューサー渡邊匡志氏が、Daydream向けにゲームを作るメリットとして、多言語対応やモバイル決済など、Androidの開発基盤がフル活用できることや、VR開発に有用なベストプラクティスが公開されていることが挙げられると語った。
